Bofrot
About Bofrot
Bofrot, also known as Puff-Puff, is a popular West African fried dough snack. It is a staple in Ghanaian cuisine but can be found in various forms across the African continent. This delightful treat is often enjoyed at breakfast, as a street food, or at celebrations. With a slightly sweet flavor and a crisp outer layer, Bofrot is beloved by both children and adults alike. It's usually served plain, but it can also be enjoyed with a sprinkle of sugar, a dip in chocolate, or alongside a spicy sauce for an exciting contrast.
Ingredients
- Flour - 500g
- Sugar - 100g
- Yeast - 10g
- Milk or water - 250ml
- Nutmeg - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- Egg - 1 large
- Oil for frying
Preparation
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, mix the yeast with a warm quantity of milk or water from the recipe. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use.
Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, nutmeg, and salt. Mix thoroughly to ensure even distribution of all the ingredients.
Step 3: Combine Everything
Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the activated yeast mixture. Add the egg and the remaining milk or water. Stir everything together until you get a smooth batter. The batter should be somewhat thick but still pourable.
Cooking
Step 1: Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, pour enough oil to allow the Bofrot to float while frying. Heat the oil on medium-high until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small dollop of batter into the oil. If it rises to the surface and begins to fry gently, the oil is ready.
Step 2: Fry the Batter
Using a small scoop or your hand, drop portions of the batter into the hot oil. Fry the Bofrot in batches to prevent overcrowding, which can lower the oil's temperature. Allow each side to cook for about 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown, using a slotted spoon to turn them as needed.
Step 3: Drain and Serve
Once cooked, remove the Bofrot from the oil with a slotted spoon and let them drain on paper towels to remove any excess oil.
How to Enjoy Bofrot
Bofrot is versatile and can be enjoyed in several ways. Serve them warm as they are for a classic experience. Alternatively, you can dust them with powdered sugar for added sweetness. For a more decadent treat, serve with a side of melted chocolate or jam. Pairing Bofrot with a hot beverage like tea or coffee can also enhance your culinary adventure.
