Stroopwafel Recipe
Introduction to Stroopwafel
The stroopwafel, a Dutch classic, is a perfect merge of crispy exterior and a sweet, gooey center. Originating in the city of Gouda in the Netherlands during the late 18th century or early 19th century, stroopwafels were initially made from scraps and syrup, transforming humble ingredients into a beloved treat. Its popularity quickly spread across the country and eventually internationally. Perfect with a hot cup of coffee or tea, the stroopwafel offers a delightful taste of Dutch culinary history.
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour - 250g
- Unsalted butter - 100g, melted
- Yeast - 7g (or 1 packet)
- Milk - 60ml, warm
- Sugar - 70g
- Egg - 1 large
- Salt - 1/4 tsp
- Cinnamon - 1/2 tsp
- Brown sugar - 200g
- Molasses - 75g
- Butter - 75g
- Vanilla extract - 1 tsp
Preparation
Step 1: Making the Dough
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix flour and sugar together. Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the mixture.
- Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a rough dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for around 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Preparing the Syrup Filling
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, molasses, butter, and cinnamon.
- Stir the mixture continuously until it melts and thickens into a syrup.
- Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Set it aside to cool slightly.
Step 3: Assembling the Stroopwafels
- Divide the risen dough into small, even balls, approximately the size of golf balls.
- Preheat a waffle iron or specific stroopwafel iron.
- Roll each dough ball flat, about 1/8 inch in thickness.
- Place the rolled dough into the preheated waffle iron and cook for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown. (You may want to use a cooking timer for precision.)
- Immediately slice the warm waffle horizontally in half before it hardens.
- Spread a spoonful of syrup onto one half of the sliced waffle and sandwich it with the other half.
- Gently press down to ensure the syrup spreads evenly between the layers.
Enjoying Your Stroopwafels
Traditionally, a stroopwafel is served by placing it on top of a steaming hot cup of coffee or tea. The heat softens the caramel center, enhancing its flavor. Enjoy this delightful treat by itself or share with friends and family over a warm beverage, savoring the mix of textures and rich buttery-caramel flavor.
