Arni Menta
Arni Menta is a traditional Greek dish that translates to "Lamb with Mint." It is a classic recipe that celebrates the flavors of tender lamb combined with the fresh, aromatic taste of mint. Often served during festive occasions, this dish represents the convivial spirit of Greek cuisine. Its origins can be traced back to rural Greece, where the use of fresh herbs and locally sourced ingredients has always been a staple.
Ingredients
- Lamb - 1kg, ideally shoulder or leg
- Mint - 1 bunch, chopped
- Olive Oil - 3 tablespoons
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Lemon - 1, juiced
- Oregano - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Pepper - to taste
- White Wine - 1/2 cup
Preparation Steps
Marinate the Lamb
Mince the garlic and chop the mint. In a bowl, mix the garlic, mint, lemon juice, oregano, salt, and pepper together with olive oil. Coat the lamb with this mixture, ensuring it is well covered. Marinate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight in the refrigerator.
Prepare the Cooking Pan
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Arrange the lamb in a roasting pan. Pour the white wine around the lamb and a bit more olive oil if desired.
Cooking Process
Cover the pan with foil and roast in the oven for about 2 hours. Check intermittently, and baste the lamb with its juices to keep it moist. If needed, add a little water to avoid drying out. After 2 hours, remove the foil and let the lamb roast uncovered for another 30 minutes or until it has a golden brown crust.
Using Cooking Timer
Use a cooking timer to ensure precision in timing through all phases of roasting, ensuring that you don't overcook or undercook the meat.
