Baklava is a rich, sweet dessert of layered phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and syrup. Originating from the Ottoman Empire, it is deeply cherished in Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and Greek cuisines. Our Baklava Fusion marries traditional flavors with a modern twist by incorporating unique flavors like cardamom and orange zest, giving a fresh spin to this classic delight.
Ingredients
- Phyllo dough - 1 package (16 ounces)
- Butter, melted - 1 cup (2 sticks)
- Nuts (walnuts or pistachios), chopped - 2 cups
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Honey - 1/2 cup
- Water - 1/4 cup
- Lemon juice - 1 tbsp
- Cinnamon - 1 tsp
- Cardamom, ground - 1/2 tsp
- Orange zest - 1 tbsp
- Rose water (optional) - 1 tsp
Preparation Instructions
Preparing the Syrup
- In a saucepan, combine honey, sugar, water, and lemon juice.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring continuously to dissolve the sugar.
- Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Add the rose water for a fragrant hint (if using).
- Remove from heat and let it cool.
Preparing the Nut Filling
- Combine the chopped nuts, cinnamon, and cardamom in a bowl.
- Mix in the orange zest.
Cooking Instructions
Layering the Baklava
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Unroll the phyllo dough and place one sheet in the prepared dish.
- Brush the top of the sheet with melted butter.
- Repeat the process with about 10 sheets of phyllo dough.
- Spread a portion of the nut mixture evenly over the stacked layers.
- Continue to layer and alternate with sheets of phyllo dough and the nut mixture until both are finished.
Baking
- Cut the assembled Baklava into desired shapes using a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until golden and crisp.
- If you wish to check the time, use a cooking timer.
Soaking with Syrup
- Upon removing from the oven, immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot Baklava.
- Allow the Baklava to absorb the syrup and cool to room temperature.
Serving Suggestions
