Bali Sambal Fusion Bowl
Introduction
The Bali Sambal Fusion Bowl is not just a meal; it's an exploration of the fragrant, spicy, and complex flavors that are the hallmark of Balinese cuisine. This dish pays homage to the traditional sambal, balancing its fiery heat with a medley of textures and tastes from fresh vegetables and proteins, blending them into a modern fusion bowl.
The foundation of this dish is the famous Indonesian sambal, a chili-based condiment that varies widely across households and regions in Indonesia, but is universally loved for its heat and depth of flavor. The Balinese version often includes ingredients like shrimp paste, kafir lime leaves, and a unique mix of spices that create an unforgettable experience for the palate.
Ingredients
- Chicken breast - 2 pieces
- Quinoa - 1 cup
- Sambal - 3 tablespoons
- Coconut oil - 2 tablespoons
- Kafir lime leaves - 4 leaves
- Lemongrass - 1 stalk, finely chopped
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
- Cucumber - 1, thinly sliced
- Carrot - 1, julienned
- Red cabbage - 1 cup, shredded
- Lime - 1, juiced
- Fresh cilantro - 1/4 cup, chopped
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Preparation
Preparing the Quinoa
Start by rinsing quinoa under cold water to remove the natural bitter coating called saponin. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of quinoa with 2 cups of water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until the quinoa is fluffy and all the water is absorbed. Set aside once done.
Cooking the Chicken
In a skillet, heat coconut oil over medium heat. Season the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper, then add to the skillet. Cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until fully cooked through. Remove from the pan and let them rest for a few minutes before slicing them thinly.
Making the Sambal Mix
In the same pan, add more coconut oil if needed and toss in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and lemongrass. Sauté until fragrant. Add the sambal and stir for a couple of minutes to mix the flavors thoroughly. Finally, incorporate the sliced kafir lime leaves.
Assembly
Begin with a generous scoop of hot, cooked quinoa in the base of your serving bowl. Arrange the sliced chicken on top. On the sides, add cucumber slices, carrot julienne, and red cabbage. Drizzle the sambal mixture over the top, making sure to cover the chicken for full flavor infusion. Finish with a squeeze of lime juice and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro.
Enjoying Your Bali Sambal Fusion Bowl
This dish is best enjoyed fresh, as the flavors from the sambal mix and the kafir lime leaves work magically with the succulent chicken and the crispy freshness of the vegetables. Pair it with a chilled ginger tea or a tropical fruit smoothie to enhance the gastronomic journey.
