Café Cubano Flan

The Café Cubano Flan is a fusion of traditional Cuban coffee and the classic flan dessert. This dessert combines the rich, bold flavors of espresso with the creamy, smooth texture of a sugar-laden flan, creating a decadent treat that captures the heart of Cuban culinary traditions. Originating from Spain, the original flan, known as "flan de leche", found its way to Cuba where it married local flavors and ingredients, such as the beloved Cuban coffee, to create this unique version.

Ingredients

Preparation

Step 1: Caramelize the Sugar

In a saucepan over medium heat, add the sugar. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves and turns into a golden caramel. Carefully pour this caramel into a round baking dish, swirling the dish to ensure the caramel coats the bottom evenly. Allow it to cool while you prepare the flan mixture.

Step 2: Prepare the Flan Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs until they are well beaten. Gradually add sweetened condensed milk and blend thoroughly. Incorporate the evaporated milk and espresso, mixing until the ingredients are smoothly combined. Finally, stir in the vanilla extract for flavor enhancement.

Cooking Process

Step 3: Baking the Flan

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the flan mixture over the caramel in the baking dish. Place the dish in a larger baking pan filled with hot water to create a water bath. This technique helps to cook the flan evenly and preserve its silky texture. Place the pan into the oven, and allow it to cook for about 50–60 minutes or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center. Do not overcook, as the texture will change.

Step 4: Cooling and Serving

Once baked, remove the flan from the oven and let it cool in the water bath. Once it reaches room temperature, refrigerate it for at least 4 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, run a knife along the edges to loosen the flan, then invert it onto a serving plate, letting the caramel drizzle over the top.

Enjoy a piece of Cuban flair with every bite of this espresso-infused delicacy. Make sure every serving is accompanied by a freshly brewed cup of Café Cubano for an authentic taste.
