History of Callaloo
The name "callaloo" originates from the West African dish known as "kelelé," which was traditionally made with spinach and okra. During the transatlantic slave trade, African slaves brought their culinary traditions to the Caribbean, where they adapted their recipes to include local ingredients. The versatile dish quickly became popular among islanders for its adaptability and nutritional value. Callaloo is often associated with festivities, and it is common to see it on tables during family gatherings and holidays.
