Dawood Basha Bites are a delightful rendition of the classic Middle Eastern dish known as Dawood Basha. Traditionally a comforting meatball stew, this version captures all the rich and tantalizing flavors, but in a convenient, bite-sized form. Dawood Basha is a dish steeped in history, with roots tracing back to the Ottoman Empire era. It's a cherished meal in Lebanese and Syrian cuisine, often served at family gatherings and special occasions.
Ingredients
- Ground Beef - 500g
- Onion - 1 large, finely chopped
- Parsley - 1 cup, chopped
- Coriander - 1/2 cup, chopped
- Cinnamon - 1 tsp
- Allspice - 1 tsp
- Pine Nuts - 1/4 cup, toasted
- Salt - 1 tsp
- Black Pepper - 1/2 tsp
- Olive Oil - 2 tbsp
- Water - 2 cups
- Tomato Paste - 2 tbsp
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Lemon Juice - 2 tbsp
Preparation
Step 1: Prepare the Meat Mixture
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, chopped parsley, chopped coriander, cinnamon, allspice, toasted pine nuts, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Step 2: Shape the Meatballs
Using your hands, shape the meat mixture into small balls, approximately the size of a large marble. Place them on a tray lined with parchment paper, ensuring they do not touch each other.
Cooking Process
Step 1: Cook the Meatballs
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the meatballs in batches and cook, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides, which should take about 8-10 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Sauce
In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Add the tomato paste and stir well, cooking for an additional 3 minutes. Slowly add water and lemon juice, stirring constantly to create a smooth sauce. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
Step 3: Simmer the Meatballs
Add the cooked meatballs back into the skillet with the sauce. Cover the skillet and let them simmer for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
