Ginger Vanilla Samosa Delight
The Ginger Vanilla Samosa Delight is a modern twist on a classic Indian street food favorite, combining the spicy and earthy notes of ginger with the creamy sweetness of vanilla. Samosas have a rich history, believed to have originated in the Middle East, and were introduced to India during the Delhi Sultanate rule by traders. Traditionally filled with spiced potatoes, peas, lentils, and occasionally meat, our version gives it a unique dessert spin.
Ingredients
- Ginger - 2 teaspoons, grated
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
- Butter - 1/4 cup, melted
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
- Milk - 1/2 cup
- Egg - 1, beaten
- Water - for sealing edges
- Vegetable oil - for deep frying
Preparation
Making the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add in melted butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the milk and egg, mixing with a spoon until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes. Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Preparing the Filling
In a saucepan, combine grated ginger and sugar over medium heat. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes syrupy. Stir in the vanilla extract and remove from heat. Allow it to cool before using.
Cooking Process
Assembling the Samosas
Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a 6-inch circle. Place a spoonful of the ginger and vanilla filling in the center of the circle. Moisten the edges with water, fold over to form a semi-circle, and press to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork to ensure they are completely sealed.
Frying the Samosas
Heat oil in a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C). Gently slide in the samosas, one or two at a time, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot. Fry each for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Make sure to monitor the cooking time for each batch to achieve optimal results.
How to Enjoy
Serve the Ginger Vanilla Samosa Delight warm, perhaps alongside a scoop of ice cream or with a cup of chai to complement the ginger and vanilla flavors. Store leftover samosas in an airtight container and reheat in an oven or toaster oven to restore crunchiness.
