Ingredients
- Flour - 2 cups
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Butter - 1/2 cup, softened
- Yeast - 2 teaspoons
- Milk - 1 cup
- Eggs - 2
- Cinnamon - 1 tablespoon
- Vanilla Extract - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Honey - 1/4 cup
- Raisins - 1/2 cup
- Walnuts - 1/2 cup, chopped
Preparation
Begin by warming the milk to a lukewarm temperature, approximately 110°F. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warmed milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the softened butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the center of the bowl and pour in the yeast mixture, followed by the beaten eggs and vanilla extract. Mix until a soft dough forms.
On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and allow it to rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Cooking Process
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Roll it out into a rectangle approximately 16x12 inches in size. Brush the surface with softened butter, then sprinkle evenly with cinnamon, honey, raisins, and walnuts.
Starting from the long side, tightly roll up the dough to form a log. Slice the log into even pieces, roughly 2 inches thick. Arrange the slices in a greased baking dish, allowing some space between them for expansion.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (Cooking Timer is great to keep track of everything). Cover the baking dish and let the dough rise again for 30 minutes until the rolls have puffed up.
Bake the twirls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and fragrant. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
