Hakata Yaki Ramen
Hakata Yaki Ramen is a unique and delicious fusion of traditional Japanese ramen and yaki or pan-fried cuisine. Originating from the Hakata district in Fukuoka, Japan, this dish marries the rich, savory flavors of ramen with the crisp, satisfying texture of pan-fried toppings. The region is famous for its unique style of ramen, characterized by a thick, cloudy pork bone broth thatβs packed with umami flavor. Over the years, chefs have experimented with various ways to reinterpret this classic, leading to the creation of Hakata Yaki Ramen.
Ingredients
- Pork Belly β 200g
- Ramen Noodles β 1 pack
- Soy Sauce β 2 tbsp
- Mirin β 1 tbsp
- Sesame Oil β 1 tsp
- Chicken Broth β 2 cups
- Spring Onions β 2, finely chopped
- Ginger β 1-inch piece, grated
- Garlic β 2 cloves, minced
- Mushrooms β 100g, sliced
- Nori β 1 sheet, cut into strips
- Boiled Egg β 1, sliced in half
Preparation
1. Preparing the Pork Belly
Begin by marinating the pork belly in a mixture of soy sauce, mirin, and ginger. Allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes so that the flavors are well absorbed. This step infuses the meat with an umami richness essential for our dish.
2. Cooking the Noodles
Bring a pot of water to boil and add the ramen noodles. Cook according to the packet instructions, usually for about 3-4 minutes. Be mindful not to overcook them as they should maintain a slight firmness. Once done, drain and set aside.
The Cooking Process
1. Creating the Broth
In a large pan, heat sesame oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger, sautΓ©ing until fragrant. Add the mushrooms and continue to cook until they have softened. Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a gentle simmer. Let the flavors combine and deepen for about 10 minutes.
2. Frying the Pork Belly
Heat a separate pan over high heat. Remove the pork belly from its marinade and fry until golden and crispy on each side. This process usually takes about 5 minutes per side. Once done, remove from heat and slice into thin strips.
3. Assembling the Dish
Add the cooked ramen noodles to the broth, stirring gently to combine. Let them heat through for about 2 minutes before adding the sliced pork belly.
