Mashuni Recipe
Mashuni is a traditional Maldivian breakfast dish that is cherished in the Maldives for its simplicity and aromatic flavor. The name "Mashuni" is derived from two words: "mash" which means "to crush" and "hunaru" which refers to "mixture". Often enjoyed with roshi (a type of flatbread), this dish is a delicious blend of coconut, tuna, onion, chili, and fresh lime juice. Historically, it reflects the Maldivian reliance on fish and coconut, two abundant resources in the archipelago.
Ingredients
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 1 can of tuna (preferably in oil or brine)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 to 3 green chilies, finely chopped
- Juice of one lime
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- 2 pieces of roshi, for serving
Preparation
Step 1: Preparing the Ingredients
Start by carefully draining the tuna to remove excess oil or brine. Transfer the tuna into a mixing bowl. Finely chop the onion and chilies. If you prefer a milder taste, reduce the number of chilies. Squeeze the lime to extract its juice, ensuring there are no seeds.
Step 2: Mixing
In the bowl with the tuna, add the grated coconut, chopped onion, chilies, and squeeze the lime over the mixture. Sprinkle salt and black pepper to taste. Stir gently until all ingredients are well combined.
Step 3: Adjust Seasoning
Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning according to your preference. A good mashuni has a balanced flavor of salty and tangy notes with a gentle hint of heat from the chilies.
Cooking Process
This dish does not require cooking time as it is traditionally served raw. The freshness of the ingredients enhances the flavor.
Serving Suggestion
Serve the mashuni with freshly made roshi. To enjoy it like a true Maldivian, take some mashuni, place it in the center of a roshi, and roll it up. It's a satisfying and delightful breakfast or brunch option.
Mashuni is more than just a dish; itβs an experience of the Maldivian way of life, setting the tone for a great day ahead.
