Sahrawi Oasis Tart
Background and History
The Sahrawi Oasis Tart is a delightful fusion of flavors from the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, a territory known as the Western Sahara. The region’s cuisine is influenced by nomadic Sahrawi culture and nearby North African countries. This tart incorporates the flavors of the desert oases, combining sweet and savory elements that reflect the unique blend of ingredients available to the Sahrawi people. Typically enjoyed during special occasions or as a testament to the rich culinary heritage of the tribe, this tart has become a favorite among those who appreciate the blend of natural ingredients and deeply rooted traditions.
Ingredients
- Dates - 200g, pitted and chopped
- Almonds - 100g, ground
- Honey - 50ml
- Olive Oil - 50ml
- Cinnamon - 1 tsp
- Orange Blossom Water - 1 tbsp
- Pastry - 200g, pre-made shortcrust
- Egg - 1, beaten
- Vanilla Extract - 1 tsp
- Salt - a pinch
Preparation
Step 1: Prepare the Pastry
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface until it is about 3mm thick. Use it to line a 9-inch tart tin, pressing it into the edges. Trim any excess from the top and preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F).
Step 2: Mix the Filling
In a bowl, mix together the dates, almonds, honey, and olive oil. Add in the cinnamon, orange blossom water, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Stir well to ensure the dates and almonds are evenly coated.
Step 3: Fill the Tart
Pour the mixture into the prepared pastry shell. Spread it out evenly using a spatula. Brush the edges of the pastry with the beaten egg to give it a glossy finish.
Step 4: Bake
Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the filling is set and the pastry is golden brown. Make sure to check the tart towards the end of the cooking time and take it out once it reaches the desired color. If you need reminders, here is a cooking timer to help manage your time effectively.
How to Enjoy
