Schwarzwälder Kipferl
Schwarzwälder Kipferl, also known as Black Forest Crescent Cookies, is a traditional German pastry that is beloved for its rich flavor and delicate texture. These cookies are named after the Black Forest region in Germany, known for its dense forests and picturesque landscapes. Kipferl, a word derived from Old German, means 'crescent', reminiscent of the cookies' iconic shape. Historically, these cookies have been a staple during the Christmas season, often baked in large batches to be shared with family and friends during festivities.
Ingredients
- Butter: 200 grams
- Granulated Sugar: 100 grams
- Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon
- All-Purpose Flour: 250 grams
- Ground Nuts (walnuts or almonds): 100 grams
- Salt: a pinch
- Dark Chocolate (for coating): 100 grams
- Powdered Sugar (for dusting): 50 grams
Preparation
Begin by preparing the butter. Ensure it is at room temperature to facilitate easy creaming. In a mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. This process usually takes around 3 to 5 minutes using an electric mixer. Add in the vanilla extract and continue beating for another minute. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, a pinch of salt, and ground nuts. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture. Combine until a dough forms. It will be soft yet pliable.
Shaping and Baking
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Take small portions of the dough, approximately a tablespoon, and roll them into logs. Curve each log into a crescent shape and place them onto the baking sheet. Ensure there is space between each Kipferl as they'll slightly expand during baking. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Keep an eye on them; you want them to be a light golden brown, not too dark. Once baked, remove the Kipferl from the oven and let them cool completely.
Finishing Touch
While the cookies are cooling, melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler or microwave. Once the chocolate is smoothly melted, gently dip the tips of each Kipferl into it, allowing any excess to drip off. Place them back onto the parchment paper. Dust the cooled cookies with powdered sugar for an added layer of sweetness and decoration.
Cooking Time
Considering the preparation time and baking time, set a cooking timer accordingly. Allow around an hour in total, including shaping, baking, and cooling of the cookies.
Enjoying Schwarzwälder Kipferl
These delightful cookies are best enjoyed once they have cooled and the chocolate has set. They can be paired with a hot cup of coffee or tea, enhancing their rich flavor. Schwarzwälder Kipferl is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a nod to German culinary traditions. Perfect for festive occasions or as a simple afternoon indulgence, their tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture makes them a favorite for many.
