Ingredients
- Rice - 1 cup
- Moong Dal (Yellow Split Gram) - 1/2 cup

- Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin Powder - 1 teaspoon
- Red Chili Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Ginger Paste - 1 teaspoon
- Green Chili - 2-3, slit
- Salt - to taste
- Sugar - 1 teaspoon
- Water - 4 cups
- Garam Masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Fresh Coriander, chopped - for garnish
Preparation
Begin by washing the rice and moong dal thoroughly under running water. Soak them separately for at least 30 minutes and then drain the excess water.
Peel and dice the potatoes into small cubes.
Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan, add the diced potatoes, and fry them until golden brown. This step is crucial for the characteristic 'bhaja' or fried flavor in the dish.
Set the fried potatoes aside and proceed to the next step of preparation.
Cooking Process
In a large saucepan, heat the remaining ghee. Add the bay leaf and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
Add ginger paste, green chilies, and sauté for a minute.
Add the soaked and drained rice and moong dal to the pan. Stir and roast them for about 3-4 minutes until they emit a nutty aroma.

Add the fried potatoes and sprinkle garam masala. Stir gently to blend without breaking the potatoes.
