Bapchae Box
Bapchae Box is a delightful fusion dish that combines elements of the Korean dish Japchae and traditional rice bowls, also known as 'Bap'. Originating from the vibrant street food culture of Korea, it brings together the savory and colorful characteristics of Japchae with the comforting simplicity of steamed rice. The Bapchae Box is popular for its balance of flavors and nutritional value, making it a favorite for both casual meals and special occasions.
Ingredients
- Sweet potato noodles - 200g
- White rice (or brown rice) - 2 cups
- Ribeye beef - 150g, thinly sliced
- Soy sauce - 3 tablespoons
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Onion - 1, thinly sliced
- Carrot - 1, julienned
- Red bell pepper - 1, julienned
- Spinach - 100g
- Sesame oil - 2 tablespoons
- Sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon
- Black pepper - to taste
- Egg - 2, for garnish
- Scallions - 2, finely chopped
Preparation
Prepare the Ingredients
- Cook the rice as per the instructions, then set aside.
- Boil water in a pot, add the sweet potato noodles, and cook until soft, approximately 6-8 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water.
- In a bowl, mix soy sauce, sugar, and sesame oil.
- Massage the beef with half of the sauce and let it marinate for 20 minutes.
- Prepare all vegetables by thinly slicing the onion and julienning the carrot and red bell pepper.
Cooking Process
Cook the Bapchae Components
- In a large pan, heat a tablespoon of sesame oil. Add the garlic and stir-fry for 30 seconds.
- Add the marinated beef and cook until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the onion, carrot, and red bell pepper. Stir-fry until soft.
- Add the spinach and cook until wilted.
- Reintroduce the beef to the pan along with the noodles and the remaining sauce. Toss to combine.
- Adjust seasoning with black pepper as needed. Stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes.
- In a separate pan, fry the eggs sunny side up for garnish.
Assemble the Bapchae Box
- Layer the cooked rice at the bottom of a serving box or bowl.
- Add the stir-fried noodles and vegetables on top.
- Garnish with the fried egg, chopped scallions, and sesame seeds.
