These bites make the perfect appetizer or snack, perfect for introducing this iconic dish to your friends and family in a more palatable and fun way.
Ingredients
- Haggis - 500g
- Potatoes - 300g, peeled and boiled
- Turnip or swede (neeps) - 200g, peeled and boiled
- Butter - 50g
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - to taste
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Breadcrumbs - 100g
- Egg - 1, beaten
Preparation
To prepare Highland Haggis Bites, begin by ensuring that your haggis is cooked according to the package instructions. Haggis is traditionally made with sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs), onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock. Our version will be simplified for ease of preparation.
Next, mash the cooked potatoes and neeps (turnip) with butter, salt, and black pepper to taste. Allow this mixture to cool slightly to make it easier to handle.
Cooking Process
- In a large bowl, combine the mashed vegetable mixture with the cooked haggis until well incorporated.
- Form the mixture into small bite-sized balls.
- Set up a breading station with three dishes: one with breadcrumbs, one with the beaten egg, and one with plain flour.
- Roll each ball in flour, dip in egg, and coat in breadcrumbs.
- Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
- Fry the breaded bites in the pan, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Ensure the oil is hot and the bites are cooked evenly. Use a cooking timer to keep track of cooking time.
