Izmir Tangle is a traditional dish originating from the coastal city of Izmir, Turkey. Izmir has a long history of culinary excellence, with influences from Greek, Ottoman, and Levantine cooking styles, and Izmir Tangle exemplifies this rich tapestry of flavors.
Ingredients
- Eggplant
- Olive Oil
- Onion
- Tomato
- Green Pepper
- Garlic
- Ground Beef
- Cumin
- Paprika
- Parsley
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- Rice
- Lemon
Preparation
Step 1: Preparing the Eggplant
To begin, wash and slice the eggplant into thin rounds. Sprinkle a little salt on both sides and let them sit for approximately 20 minutes. This will help to remove any bitterness from the eggplant.
Step 2: Chopping the Vegetables
While waiting for the eggplant, finely chop the onion, dice the tomato, and slice the green pepper. Crush the garlic cloves. Set all these ingredients aside for the next step.
Cooking Process
Step 1: Sautéing the Eggplant
Heat a large pan over medium heat and add a splash of olive oil. Pat the eggplant slices dry with a paper towel, then sauté them in the pan until they are golden brown on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.
Step 2: Cooking the Ground Beef
In the same pan, add more olive oil if needed and sauté the onion until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Season with cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
Step 3: Simmering the Sauce
Add the tomato and green pepper to the pan. Stir everything together and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Step 4: Layering the Dish
In a baking dish, layer the sautéed eggplant and beef mixture, ensuring each layer is even. Cover with foil and bake in an oven preheated to 180°C (356°F) for 30 minutes. Use a cooking timer to keep track of the time.
