Mooncakes are a traditional Chinese pastry, often eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a celebration of the moon and the harvest. These delicacies are rich in culture and history, symbolizing reunion and togetherness. Dating back over 3,000 years, mooncakes have evolved in flavor and form but remain a staple treat that brings families together under the full moon. In this recipe, we explore the traditional flavors while adding a unique spin to create Mooncake Splendor.
Ingredients

- Vegetable Oil
- Golden Syrup
- Lye Water
- Red Bean Paste
- Lotus Seed Paste
- Egg
- Salted Egg Yolks
- Melon Seeds
- Water
Preparation
Preparing the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, vegetable oil, golden syrup, and lye water.
- Mix until a smooth dough forms, then wrap in plastic wrap and let it rest for at least an hour.
Shaping the Filling
- In separate bowls, prepare the red bean paste and lotus seed paste.
- Take a small portion of either paste and flatten it; place a salted egg yolk in the center, then mold the paste around it.
- Press a few melon seeds into the paste for extra texture.
Shaping the Mooncakes
- Preheat your oven according to the instructions found in our cooking timer guide.
- Roll out the rested dough and cut into rounds. Each round should be large enough to enclose the filling.
- Wrap the dough around the prepared filling ball and mold into a smooth ball.
- Press the ball into a mooncake mold to form the traditional patterns on top. Gently tap out the molded mooncake.
Cooking Process
- Place the molded mooncakes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Lightly brush each mooncake with a beaten egg wash to achieve a glossy finish.

- Halfway through baking, remove from oven and brush another layer of egg wash.
- Continue baking until the mooncakes are a rich golden brown.
- Once baked, remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack.
