Sour Soup Sampler

The Sour Soup Sampler is a delightful exploration of tangy, savory, and slightly spicy flavors. Originating from various culinary traditions, this sampler integrates the signature sour notes found in Asian, Eastern European, and Latin American soups. It's a perfect way to embrace the diversity of sour soups around the world, showcasing contrasting flavors and ingredients that make each one unique.

History of Sour Soups

Sour soups have a rich culinary history, with each culture bringing its own twist to the tangy delight. In Southeast Asia, soups like Tom Yum from Thailand and Sinigang from the Philippines highlight the use of citrusy fruits, tamarind, or vinegar to achieve their signature sour taste. Eastern European sour soups, such as the Polish Zurek or Russian Borscht, often utilize fermented ingredients or sour cream to bring forward the desired tang. In Latin America, you’ll encounter soups like the Mexican Sopa de Lima, where lime is the star ingredient.

For this sampler, we will prepare mini versions of Tom Yum, Sinigang, and Zurek. You will need the following ingredients:
