Winter's Embrace Tart
Introduction
The Winter's Embrace Tart is a delightful seasonal dessert that captures the essence of cold weather comforts. Born from the need to utilize winter fruits and spices, this tart has become a staple during the colder months. Its origins trace back to European traditions where fruit preservation and spice trade were key elements of winter cuisine, allowing for an aromatic and flavorful dish when fresh produce was scarce.
This tart combines fruits such as apples, pears, and dried fruits, enveloped in a spiced, nutty crust. It celebrates the warmth and fragrance brought about by spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. The addition of a rich mascarpone filling elevates this tart, making it as luxurious as it is comforting.
Ingredients
- Flour - 2 cups
- Unsalted butter - 1 cup, chilled and cubed
- Sugar - 3/4 cup
- Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- Cold water - 4 to 6 tablespoons
- Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- Nutmeg - 1/2 teaspoon
- Clove - 1/4 teaspoon
- Apples - 2 large, peeled and sliced
- Pears - 2 large, peeled and sliced
- Raisins - 1/2 cup
- Walnuts - 1/2 cup, chopped
- Mascarpone cheese - 8 ounces
- Egg - 1 large
- Lemon - 1, zested and juiced
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
Preparation
Making the Crust
Begin by preparing the spiced crust. In a large bowl, combine the flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the chilled butter cubes and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together. Do not overwork the dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Preparing the Filling
While the dough chills, prepare the filling. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples and pears with the remaining sugar, lemon zest and juice, clove, and a pinch of salt. Add raisins and mix gently.
Line the bottom of a tart pan with the chopped walnuts. In a separate bowl, whisk together the mascarpone, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Spread this mixture over the walnut layer in the tart pan.
Assembly and Baking
Preheat your oven and set a timer for consistent monitoring. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit your tart pan. Press the dough into the pan, ensuring it is evenly distributed.
Arrange the fruit mixture on top of the mascarpone layer, spreading it evenly. Fold any overhanging dough edges over the filling. Optionally, sprinkle a few additional nuts or sugar on top for extra texture and sweetness.
Bake the tart for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Set a timer for accuracy. Allow the tart to cool on a wire rack before serving.
Enjoying the Winter's Embrace Tart
This tart is best enjoyed slightly warm. Serve slices with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A rich, spiced tea or a glass of dessert wine complements the flavors beautifully, making for a perfect winter's treat.
