Known for its vibrant markets and fresh seafood, Busan offers a unique twist on classic Korean dishes. This recipe combines the coastal flavors of Busan with a modern flair, making it a delightful snack for any occasion.
The recipe draws from the city's renowned street food culture, incorporating elements from dishes such as Bibimbap and Tteokbokki. The result is a delightful blend of textures and flavors that embody the spirit of Busan's culinary scene.
Ingredients
- Rice - 2 cups
- Seafood mix - 200g (shrimp, squid, mussels)
- Garlic - 2 cloves
- Gochujang (Korean chili paste) - 2 tablespoons
- Soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
- Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
- Mixed vegetables (carrot, zucchini, and bell pepper) - 200g
- Green onions - 2 stalks
- Nori (seaweed) - 1 sheet
- Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Preparation
1. Preparing the Rice
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This will remove excess starch and prevent the rice from becoming mushy.
Cook the rice according to the package instructions, or use a cooking timer for precise timing.
2. Preparing the Seafood and Vegetables
Clean the seafood mix, ensuring all shells are removed, and slice into bite-sized pieces.
Chop the mixed vegetables into thin strips for even cooking.
Cooking Process
Step 1: Stir-frying
Heat a tablespoon of sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the chopped garlic and stir until fragrant.
Throw in the seafood mix and cook for about 3-4 minutes.
Add the mixed vegetables and stir-fry until they start to soften. This should take another 3 minutes.
Season with soy sauce and a spoonful of gochujang for a spicy kick.
Step 2: Combining
Mix the cooked rice into the stir-fry carefully to not break the grains.
Stir in the sliced green onions, and let the ingredients cook together for about 2 minutes.
Taste and add salt and black pepper as needed.
Step 3: Garnishing
Remove from heat and transfer the Busan Twist Munch to a serving dish.
Cut the nori into thin strips and sprinkle over the top.
Finish with a generous sprinkle of sesame seeds.
How to Enjoy
Busan Twist Munch is best enjoyed hot, directly from the pan. It can be served as an appetizer, a side dish, or a light meal.
Accompany it with a side of kimchi or a chilled glass of barley tea for an authentic Korean experience. The flavors of the sea meld perfectly with the spicy and umami-rich gochujang and soy sauce notes, making each bite irresistible.
