Sahawiq Chicken Wrap
Background and History of Sahawiq Chicken Wrap
The Sahawiq Chicken Wrap is an exquisite culinary fusion inspired by Middle Eastern flavors and its renowned salsas. Originating from the rich culinary traditions of Yemen, Sahawiq—also known as Zhug—is a fiery hot sauce bursting with spices and herbs. It infuses this chicken wrap with a distinct kick that's both aromatic and irresistibly spicy.
The dish further marries the spicy punch of Sahawiq with the versatility of the globally-loved chicken wrap, offering a taste experience that's as rich in cultural history as it is in flavor.
Ingredients
- Chicken breast - 500g, boneless and skinless
- Sahawiq sauce - 1/2 cup
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Lemon juice - 2 tablespoons
- Cumin - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - to taste
- Flour tortillas - 4 large
- Lettuce - 1 cup, shredded
- Tomato - 1, diced
- Cucumber - 1, sliced
- Plain Greek yogurt - 1 cup
- Mint leaves - a handful, finely chopped
Preparation
Begin by marinating the chicken breast. In a large bowl, combine the sahawiq sauce, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, cumin, coriander powder, salt, and black pepper.
Add the chicken breast pieces to the marinade, ensuring they are thoroughly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow flavors to meld.
Prepare the yogurt sauce by combining the Greek yogurt with mint leaves, salt, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Mix well and refrigerate until serving.
Cooking Process
Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated chicken breast pieces and cook for about 7 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked through. Use a cooking timer to keep track.
Once cooked, remove the chicken from the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. Then slice it thinly for easy wrapping.
Warm the flour tortillas on a skillet or in the microwave for a few seconds until pliable.
Assemble the wraps by placing a portion of sliced chicken on each tortilla. Layer with lettuce, diced tomatoes, and cucumber slices.
Top it off with a dollop of the prepared yogurt sauce and carefully roll the tortilla into a wrap.
How to Enjoy
The Sahawiq Chicken Wrap is best enjoyed fresh and warm. Serve it with a light salad or some grilled vegetables for a complete meal. Consider pairing the wrap with a cool, refreshing drink to offset the delightful heat of the sauce. Each bite presents a perfect harmony of spicy, tangy, and fresh flavors that is sure to tantalize your taste buds.
