Honey Sohan Halwa
History and Background
Sohan Halwa is a rich, traditional confectionery from the Indian subcontinent, particularly popular in regions of Pakistan and India. Its origin traces back to Persia, where it was prepared as a luxurious dessert for royalty. The inclusion of honey in this variant adds a modern twist to the timeless classic, enhancing its nutritive value and flavor profile. Traditionally, Sohan Halwa is known for its chewy texture, dense sweetness, and is often adorned with nuts to celebrate special occasions and festivals.
Ingredients
- Honey - 1 cup
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Whole Wheat Flour - 1/2 cup
- Ghee - 1/2 cup
- Milk - 2 cups
- Cardamom Powder - 1 teaspoon
- Almonds - 1/4 cup, sliced
- Pistachios - 1/4 cup, chopped
- Saffron Strands - a pinch
- Rose Water - 1 tablespoon
Preparation
Gathering Ingredients
Before you begin, ensure all your ingredients are measured and prepared. This will make the cooking process smooth and efficient. It is advisable to have all nuts peeled and sliced. Ensure your saffron strands are soaked in a teaspoon of warm milk to enhance their flavor.
Preparing the Syrup
Start by heating a pan over medium heat. Add honey and sugar. Stir continuously until the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture starts to boil. Monitor the syrup closely to prevent it from burning, adjusting the heat as necessary.
Mixing the Flour
In another pan, lightly roast the whole wheat flour until it turns golden brown and gives off a nutty aroma. This roasting enhances the flavor of the flour and adds a wonderful depth to the halwa. Once roasted, mix it into the syrup slowly, ensuring no lumps are formed.
Cooking Process
Once the flour is incorporated, add the ghee gradually, stirring continuously. The mixture will start to thicken. Add milk slowly, ensuring it is well combined. This step is crucial for achieving the characteristic chewy texture of Sohan Halwa.
Reduce the heat and let the mixture cook for about 30 to 45 minutes. Use a spatula to keep stirring to prevent the mixture from sticking to the pan. Adjust your cooking timer accordingly based on the consistency you aim for. The mixture is done when it starts to leave the sides of the pan and forms a ball.
Flavoring and Setting
Once the desired consistency is reached, add cardamom powder, soaked saffron, and rose water. Mix well and transfer the mixture to a greased tray. Flatten it using a spatula or a greased spoon.
Sprinkle almonds and pistachios on top and press gently to set them in. Let it cool to room temperature to solidify.
Enjoying Honey Sohan Halwa
Once the halwa is cooled and set, cut it into desired pieces and serve. This delightful treat can be enjoyed with a cup of tea or as a dessert after meals. Honey Sohan Halwa not only serves as a wonderful treat for yourself but also makes a splendid gift on festive occasions.
