Jangmyung Towers
Introduction to Jangmyung Towers
Jangmyung Towers is an exquisite fusion dish that combines traditional Korean and contemporary flavors into a dish that's as visually striking as it is delicious. Inspired by the towering structures found in Korean architecture, this dish has emerged as a symbol of Korea's culinary innovation, marrying ancient food crafting techniques with modern-day cooking art. Jangmyung Towers typically feature layers of cooked rice, seasoned vegetables, and savory meat or tofu, elegantly stacked to mimic a tower. Each bite offers a harmonious balance of flavors and textures that reflect Korea's culinary diversity.
Ingredients
- Rice - 3 cups
- Water - 4.5 cups
- Beef or Tofu - 500g
- Soy sauce - 3 tbsp
- Sesame oil - 2 tbsp
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Spinach - 200g
- Carrots - 2, julienned
- Kimchi - 1 cup, chopped
- Ginger - 1 tbsp, minced
- Gochujang (Korean chili paste) - 2 tbsp
- Nori sheets - 4, cut into strips
- Sesame seeds - for garnish
Preparation
Preparing the Rice
Start by rinsing the rice under cold water to remove excess starch. In a rice cooker or a pot, combine the rinsed rice with the appropriate amount of water (around 1.5 times the volume of the rice) to cook. Allow the rice to cook thoroughly, following the guidance of your rice cooker or stove top methods. More detailed instructions can be found here.
Preparing the Filling
For the protein layer, choose between beef or tofu. If using beef, slice into thin strips. Marinate with soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and ginger. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes. For a vegetarian option, cube the tofu and similarly marinate. Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat and cook until beef is browned or tofu is golden on all sides.
Vegetable Preparation
Blanch the spinach briefly in boiling water, then immerse in ice water to stop the cooking process. Drain and squeeze out excess moisture. Sauté carrots in a bit of sesame oil until tender.
Assembling Jangmyung Towers
Using a small, round mold, layer the components to create the tower. Start with a base of rice, followed by a layer of seasoned spinach, and a layer of either beef or tofu. Add a layer of sautéed carrots and top with chopped kimchi. Add another layer of rice and press gently to set the tower. Carefully remove the mold. Garnish with nori strips and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
Serving and Enjoying
Jangmyung Towers are best enjoyed immediately while the ingredients are fresh and flavors are vibrant. Consider serving it alongside a small dish of soy sauce mixed with gochujang for an added kick. Pair with traditional Korean sides like kimchi or pickled radishes for a complete meal experience.
