Kartoffelkäse Twist
The Kartoffelkäse Twist is a delightful spin on a traditional Bavarian appetizer known as Kartoffelkäse. Originally from Bavaria, Kartoffelkäse is a creamy mashed potato dip flavored with fresh herbs, mustard, and other regional touches. It has brought joy to many generations as a staple at outdoor picnics, family gatherings, and beer gardens across Germany.
The twist in our version comes with the addition of a crusty bread layer, making it not only a delicious dip but also a filling snack or side dish. With roots deeply entwined in German culinary traditions, Kartoffelkäse offers a perfect blend of simplicity, heartiness, and flavor.
Ingredients
- Potatoes - 500g, peeled and cubed
- Butter - 50g
- Sour Cream - 100g
- Dijon Mustard - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - to taste
- Ground Black Pepper - to taste
- Parsley - 2 tablespoons, freshly chopped
- Chives - 2 tablespoons, freshly chopped
- Bread - 4 slices
- Cream Cheese - 100g
Preparation
Step 1: Preparing the Potatoes
Begin by washing and peeling the potatoes. Cut them into evenly sized cubes to ensure they cook uniformly. Place the potatoes into a large pot filled with cold water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Boil until the potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a fork, approximately 15-20 minutes.
Once cooked, drain the potatoes in a colander and return them to the pot. Allow them to steam dry for a few minutes to remove excess moisture.
Step 2: Making the Kartoffelkäse
To the warm potatoes, add butter and allow it to melt. Stir in sour cream and cream cheese for a rich texture. Season with dijon mustard, salt, and ground black pepper to taste. Mash the mixture until you achieve your desired consistency. Stir in freshly chopped parsley and chives, reserving some for garnish.
Step 3: Preparing the Bread
Take the bread slices and spread a thin layer of cream cheese on one side of each slice. This will not only add flavor but also help bind the Kartoffelkäse when placed on top.
Step 4: Assembling the Twist
Spread a generous layer of the Kartoffelkäse mixture over the bread slices with cream cheese facing up. Preheat your oven or grill to medium heat, approximately 180°C (356°F).
Place the slices onto a baking tray and cook until the bread becomes crisp and golden, and the topping is bubbly - this should take around 10-15 minutes. Keep a cooking timer handy to avoid burning.
