Kiwiberry Crumble
A Delectable Fusion of Flavor and Tradition
The kiwiberry is a unique fruit that offers a sweet and tangy flavor, much like its larger cousin, the kiwi. Its bite-sized convenience and smooth, edible skin make it a perfect ingredient for various dishes. The crumble, a dish with deep roots in British cuisine, was initially created during World War II due to food rationing when ingredients for pies were limited. In blending the two, we create a Kiwiberry Crumble—a dessert that not only embraces historical roots but also celebrates modern culinary innovation.
Ingredients
- Kiwiberries - 500g
- Sugar - 100g
- All-purpose flour - 150g
- Unsalted butter - 100g, cold and cubed
- Ground almonds - 50g
- Cinnamon - 1 tsp
- Rolled oats - 50g
- Salt - a pinch
- Lemon juice - 1 tbsp
Preparation
Begin by preheating your oven to 180°C (356°F). This ensures that kiwiberry crumble will bake evenly and beautifully. Next, wash the kiwiberries, and slice each one in half. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle with sugar and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat, ensuring every berry is covered.
Preparing the Crumble Topping
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, butter, ground almonds, cinnamon, rolled oats, and a pinch of salt.
- Use your fingers to rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. This step is crucial for creating a crumbly topping that contrasts perfectly with the juicy kiwiberry filling.
After your topping is ready, evenly distribute it over the prepared kiwiberries in the baking dish.
Cooking Process
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and the kiwiberries are bubbling. Keep an eye on the topping to ensure it doesn’t burn. For precision, track this using a cooking timer.
Serving Suggestions
Once baked, remove the kiwiberry crumble from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This allows the juices to settle, making it easier to serve. Best enjoyed warm, this crumble pairs beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of freshly whipped cream.
